Q: I have a sister who married two men. She bore three daughters from the first. She has a partner with her who has three children. Two of the older children nursed from my sister, and the third did not. The son is proposing to marry a daughter of the second man, and she has nursed two of his brothers. Is it permissible for him to marry her, given that the young son did not nurse from her?
A: If this son did not nurse from the girl’s mother the amount of nursing that makes marriage forbidden, then it is permissible for him to marry the girl. The nursing that makes marriage forbidden is reaching five sucklings or more, and occurring within the first two years. A suckling is defined as: the child grasps the breast and sucks milk from it, then releases it to breathe, move, or similar. If he returns
for another suckling… and so on. The nursing of his two brothers has no effect on his marriage to the girl he wishes to marry. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
