Question: The first fatwa of Fatwa No. ( 3386 )
Q1: I inform Your Eminence that I have seven brothers, all of whom are married, and all our rights are equal. The situation we are in is free mixing, meaning: men mixing with women, and that without hijab, and I have asked them to stop the mixing, and I proved it to them by the Noble Qur'an and the Hadith, but they say: These are our customs and traditions, and we are farmers and employees living together, we cannot separate from the women in eating, drinking, and sitting; for this reason, I was forced to impose the hijab on my wife and daughters, and I refrained from uncovering and greeting my brothers' wives, except that some annoyances
and anger occurred; for this reason, I hope Your Eminence will inform me what I should do, and what is the solution to this family problem, and what is our obligation if we remain mixed, men with women, and if I order my wife to wear the hijab and I refrain, what should I do? And the truth is that we are in old pre-Islamic age of ignorance customs. We ask Allah for pardon and well-being.
A1: Covering the woman's face from a non-mahram is obligatory, and her seclusion with men who are not her mahrams without the presence of her mahram is forbidden for her, and placing her hand to shake the hand of a non-mahram is not permissible to do, and it is not permissible to continue doing it for one who has been informed of the Islamic ruling on the grounds that it is the custom of his people and the people of his land, and it is obligatory for the Muslim to follow the Shari'ah of Allah with satisfaction, obedience, and desire for what is with Allah, and fear of His punishment, even if it contradicts the closest and most beloved people to him, not following desires and customs that Allah the Exalted has not legislated, and Islam transferred the Arabs from their bad customs, some suddenly and some gradually, and it was nothing but good and guidance for them. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.
