Q: Is it permissible for a woman to uncover herself and greet her mother’s maternal uncle and maternal grandfather, as well as her father’s maternal uncle and maternal grandfather? What is the jurisprudential basis for permitting or prohibiting this?
A: It is permissible for a woman to show her adornment to her mother’s maternal uncle and maternal grandfather, and to her father’s maternal uncle and maternal grandfather, just as she shows it to her other mahrams, for two reasons: First: They are her mahrams, and it is forbidden for each of them to marry her, due to the generality of the saying of Allah the Exalted:[An-Nisa 4:23],
and its explanation is that the intended meaning of “daughters of brothers” in the verse is daughters of brothers, however far removed, not just the daughters of a brother through the direct line. The maternal grandfather of a woman is the brother of her paternal grandfather, and grandfathers, however high up, are considered fathers, so this woman falls under the general prohibition regarding daughters of brothers. The maternal grandfather of a woman is the brother of her mother’s father, so she falls under the general prohibition regarding daughters of sisters. The intended meaning of “daughters of sisters” in the verse is daughters of sisters, however far removed, not just the daughters of a sister through the direct line. The maternal uncle of a woman’s mother is the brother of her mother’s mother, and her father’s maternal uncle is the brother of her father’s mother, so this woman falls under the general prohibition regarding daughters of sisters. Once it is established that she is a mahram to the men mentioned in the question, it is permissible for her to show them of her adornment what she shows to those whom Allah mentioned in His saying:[An-Nur 24:31] the verse. Second: Allah has permitted a woman to show her brothers’ and sisters’ sons, however far removed, the same adornment she shows to her other mahrams, such as fathers, sons, and brothers. Allah the Exalted said: [An-Nur 24:31] the verse,
and the maternal uncle of a woman’s mother, her father’s maternal uncle, her mother’s maternal grandfather, and her father’s maternal grandfather, however high up, are in the same sense as brothers’ and sisters’ sons, however far removed, in terms of lineage. Therefore, the ruling regarding showing adornment is the same for all of them. As for their greeting her, it is by handshake only. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
