Question: The first fatwa of Fatwa No. ( 3429 )
Q1: What is Allah’s ruling regarding the money a woman earns by working outside her home? And how is the matter if she goes out of her home to work in a state of tabarruj (display of adornment)? Likewise, regarding the money of a student who studies at the university? And how is the matter if she goes out to study in a state of tabarruj (display of adornment)?
A: First: The principle is that a woman does not go out of the house except with her husband’s permission. If her husband gives her permission and she goes out, she must go out in a manner that does not attract the gazes of men. It is obligatory for her to cover her face, her hands, and the rest of her body, and it is not permissible for her to display her adornment; for Allah the Exalted said:[Al-Ahzab 33:33]
Her husband has the right to prevent her if she does not go out except in a state of tabarruj (display of adornment). As for the money she earns in exchange for work outside her home, if the work is permissible, then the earnings are permissible and belong to her. If the work is forbidden, then the earnings are forbidden. Her going out in a state of tabarruj (display of adornment) has no effect on the permissibility of her earnings if her work is permissible, but she commits a sin by displaying her adornment. Second: The student who goes out to study at the university must cover her face, her hands, and the rest of her body. The details of this have already been mentioned in the answer to the first paragraph. As for the money she receives on the basis that she is a student, if it is given to her as her salary and the university pays her this money in exchange for prescribed work, then this money is lawful and belongs to her. If it is in exchange for forbidden work, then it is forbidden. Her tabarruj (display of adornment) on her way to the university has no effect on the permissibility of what the university pays her. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
