The ruling on a woman working outside her home, especially if she is displaying her adornment
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The first question of Fatwa No. ( 3429 )
Q1: What is Allah’s ruling regarding the money a woman earns by working outside her home, and how is the matter if she leaves her home to work while displaying her adornment? Likewise, what is the ruling regarding the money of a student studying at the university, and how is the matter if she leaves to study while displaying her adornment?
A1: First: The principle is that a woman does not leave the house except with her husband’s permission. If her husband gives her permission and she goes out, she must go out in a manner that does not attract the gaze of men. It is obligatory for her to cover her face, her hands, and the rest of her body, and it is not permissible for her to display her adornment; for Allah the Exalted said:[Al-Ahzab 33:33] , and her husband has the right to prevent her if she does not go out except while displaying her adornment. As for the money she earns in exchange for work outside her home, if
the work is permissible, then the earnings are permissible, and if the work is forbidden, then the earnings are forbidden. Her going out while displaying her adornment has no effect on the permissibility of her earnings if her work is permissible, but she commits a sin by displaying her adornment. Second: The student who goes out to study at the university must cover her face, her hands, and the rest of her body, and the details of this have already been mentioned in the first paragraph of the answer. As for the money she receives on the basis that she is a student, if it is paid to her as a salary and the university pays her this money in exchange for prescribed work, then this money is lawful. If it is in exchange for forbidden work, then it is forbidden. Her displaying her adornment on her way to the university has no effect on the permissibility of what is paid to her by the university. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
