The second question of Fatwa number ( 14548 )
Q2: I am a religious young woman, and more than one young man has proposed to me more than once, so I had to seek guidance from Allah for each of them more than once, but I did not see anything, even though I had previously sought guidance regarding a young man who had proposed to me, and I saw in the seeking of guidance what made me leave the matter. When I realized that I had to do something before my family chose any of them, I said: “O Lord, make it happen for me with the one among them in whom You see good.” I was proposed to by a man who is the best of those who proposed to me; he is of good character and somewhat religious. However, after a year of the engagement, I felt that this engagement was a trial for me, even though I have a good relationship with him and I have not seen anything from him that harms me in my religion or my worldly affairs. So I sought guidance from Allah three times again, but I did not see anything and I did not feel anything. What worries me is that I have not seen anything that decisively indicates rejection or acceptance. So what should I do? Should I leave the matter to Allah to guide it, or should I reject it after this period? May Allah reward us with good.
A2. It is recommended that when a suitor proposes to a woman, she should advise her family to inquire about him, or appoint a trustworthy relative to ask about his religion, his trustworthiness, and his character. If they speak well of him, she should pray two rak'ahs and seek guidance from Allah the Exalted regarding marriage to this suitor, using the supplication mentioned in the hadith of seeking guidance. If she finds
expansion in her heart and tranquility in her soul, she should seek help from Allah and resolve to marry him. If she finds constriction in her heart and a lack of tranquility regarding him, she should turn herself away from marrying him. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
