Is it permissible for a man to fast two consecutive months as expiation for the violations he has committed in his life, and what is obligatory for him to do?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : I intended to fast for two consecutive months for the sake of Allah as expiation for what I have committed in my life. When some of my colleagues learned of this, they asked me if I had committed an act that necessitates the expiation of fasting two consecutive months. I told them: No. They said: Then you owe nothing if you do not complete the fast; in fact, it is not permissible for you to do so. I complied with their words and broke the fast. Is their statement correct, and what is obligatory for me to do?

The Shaykh : Their statement is correct. A person cannot perform acts of worship other than what Allah has permitted. Allah the Exalted did not command His servants to fast two consecutive months as a precaution against sins that may have occurred on their part. However, a person is commanded to increase in repentance and seeking forgiveness, for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) encouraged this, as he said:
O people! Repent to your Lord, for I repent to Allah a hundred times a day. يا أيها الناس! توبوا إلى ربكم فإني أتوب إلى الله في اليوم مائة مرة
This is the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
As for your breaking the fast when they informed you, that is the truth. It is part of the perfection of faith for a person to stop at the truth when it becomes clear to him. He who stopped at what he heard has done well. I advise you and my other Muslim brothers not to worship Allah the Exalted with anything until they know that it is from the Shari'ah of Allah, so that they worship Allah the Exalted with understanding. The Shari'ah is not for us to determine; it belongs to Allah and His Messenger. For this reason, Allah the Exalted criticized and condemned those who took partners with Him to legislate for the servants, saying:
Or have they other deities who have ordained for them a religion to which Allah has not consented? أَمْ لَهُمْ شُرَكَاءُ شَرَعُوا لَهُمْ مِنَ الدِّينِ مَا لَمْ يَأْذَنْ بِهِ اللَّهُ
