The ruling on one who is required to fast two consecutive months but breaks the fast between them
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question: I am required to fast two consecutive months as expiation, and I have fasted them—praise be to Allah. However, I fasted the first month in full, then broke the fast for two days, and then completed the fasting. Before finishing the month, I fell ill for three days and broke the fast, and I made up those days afterward. Some people told me that I must fast two consecutive months again without breaking the fast in between. Please guide me on what I should do now?
Answer: If your breaking of the fast was for a valid legal excuse, such as illness, and you promptly completed the two months after the excuse was removed, then you do not have to repeat it, and your fast is valid.
However, if you broke the fast without a valid legal excuse, you must repeat the fasting of the two consecutive months—sixty days—as indicated by the verses and hadiths. Less than sixty days is not sufficient unless the shortening of the month is proven by valid legal evidence. And success is from Allah.
