Fatwa number ( 12338 )
Q: Is it considered a violation, a breach, and a deviation from the marital justice that Allah has made obligatory upon those married to two, three, or four wives, if this husband gives one of his wives a gift to the exclusion of the other, except that this gift is by way of a reward for this wife, because she does not see her husband in any work in which she is capable of helping him in that work except that she helps him, such as carrying water to him in the building, and gathering his harvest in the field, and in all of this she leaves her household work, spinning and the like, while her co-wife who refuses and absolves herself of helping the husband spins her spinning and other crafts such as embroidery, which she practices and sells for money, disposing of this money however she wishes and desires, and the aforementioned one leaves all these crafts for most of her time to help her husband in works she is capable of. And should the husband leave her without a reward for her work?
A: It is obligatory for a man, if he has more than one wife, to be just between his wives in lodging, financial maintenance, and housing, and it is not permissible for him to give one of them a gift to the exclusion of the rest without a legitimate religious reason, and by this it is known that
rewarding the wife who helps him in his works in return for her service is without blame. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
