Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 13822 )
Q: A man married eight years ago and has not had any children
at all. He is satisfied with his wife, but the matter is with his mother, who is proposing that he marry another woman besides the one he has. He does not desire this; his mother and his eldest brother are proposing that he marry another woman, and he does not desire this because his wife is sincere with him and is most careful of him. However, his mother is asking him to marry so that he may have male and female children. So that man went to the doctor, and he told him: she needs treatment estimated at (1000 pounds). He presented this matter to his mother, but she did not agree to it. She is causing him commotion, confusion, and anxiety. So in this, if he accepts his mother’s words and marries, his first wife will leave his home. And if he stays with her, he cannot reconcile with his mother and speak with her, because she is far from him in residence. Also, his eldest brother, if he marries over her, he cannot provide for their livelihood. So we ask you for the answer.
A: You may marry a second wife if you are able, for the sake of children, because of the increase of the Muslim community therein. As for the first wife, you may agree with her on what is in the interest of both parties, whether separation or remaining. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
