The ruling on marrying more than one woman, and the fact that there are those who cannot afford to marry
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
We often see Muslim brothers who have been granted wealth by Allah proceed to marry a second or third wife. In many Muslim lands, there are pious Muslim young men and Muslim young women who do not find the ability to marry with just one wife; due to the lack of housing to shelter them and the inability to provide for them. Is it not better to help these pious young men and women to marry and protect them from falling into sin and disobedience?
Answer:
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: If you, O questioner, are active; marry whom you wish from among the people, and restrict yourself to one wife—if one wife suffices you.
As for the one whom one wife does not suffice, and one wife is not enough for him, and he wants to chaste himself and keep away from what is forbidden; then he may marry two or three.
Even if it is in Pakistan, or in Afghanistan, or in Egypt, or in the Levant, or you are in your own country, and there are young men who cannot afford to marry, he is not obligated to marry them off. They must work and get married, and their relatives must marry them off. As for this person who needs a wife, he is not obligated to marry off others; he starts with himself.
