The questioner : I am married and I have one daughter who is twelve years old. My mother is an elderly woman, and my sisters have not taken care of her. She wants to stay with me, but my husband has not accepted her staying with me. She wants to live with me because she feels comfortable with me, but my husband does not agree. What should I do? Should I leave my husband and my daughter to devote myself to caring for her, or what? Please advise us, knowing that my brothers are already married?
The Shaykh : It is well known that the house in which you live with your husband is your husband's house, and he has the right to prevent whomever he wishes and to permit whomever he wishes to enter and reside in it. So if your husband prevents your mother from coming to you in his house, he has the right to do so. However, I advise him to be flexible and to permit your mother to live with you in the house, for the sake of the kindness shown to your mother and the kindness shown to you.[Al-Baqarah 2:195] So I hope that your husband will look at your mother and at you with an eye of compassion and mercy.
