If a man dislikes his wife, what should he do?

Fatwa number ( 6723 )
Q: I am a young man, 23 years old, and I married a close relative of mine, namely my maternal aunt’s daughter. I married her about two years ago, and I married her while I never loved her at all, but my mother convinced me with a lot of talk about her, saying she was a polite and honorable girl, until I was convinced to marry her. However, after the marriage, no love for her came into my heart, and I tried hard, but to no avail. My workplace is far from my mother’s residence, and she lives with my mother. Now, I do not visit them more than once a year, as I cannot bear to sit with my wife, due to my lack of desire for her. She has given me a daughter, and she loves me, and I love her very much, but I do not want her as my wife. However, what happened was caused, as I mentioned, by my mother, and also by my youth at the time; I was in a race to marry before my colleagues and did not think about the future. Since she is a very honorable and sensible girl, I was unable to convince my heart to accept her. Therefore, O honorable Mufti, I ask you for an urgent solution, and what should I do with her? If I divorce her, my mother will be upset, and I am also afraid for her not marrying after me and being lost, because, as I mentioned, she is my maternal aunt’s daughter. I do not want her to suffer and be distressed, nor for my innocent daughter to be lost. Or should I keep her and bear the anxiety, and marry
another woman? Knowing that I preferred to stay at my workplace for fear of making actions that would upset my mother, as she is easily upset, especially regarding her sister’s daughter, my wife. Knowing that if I marry another woman while she is still with me, I will not be just, as long as I have not loved her from now on.

A: It is obligatory for the husband to treat his wife with kindness and to keep her in a good manner. If he dislikes her, he may divorce her with one divorce, hoping that his condition may change and he may return to her. You may marry a second wife, and it is obligatory for you to be just between the wives in financial maintenance, housing, and lodging, unless one of the wives waives her right to any of that, in which case there is no blame on you. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
