What is the meaning of the saying of Allah the Exalted: “Alif, Lam, Meem. Have the Romans been defeated? In the nearest land. And they, after their defeat, will overcome, within a few years. To Allah belongs the command before and after. And the believers will rejoice on the day when Allah will give them victory. His might is mighty.”

The questioner : He asks about the meaning of the saying of Allah the Exalted:
(1) Alif, Lam, Meem. (2) The Byzantines have been defeated (3) In the nearest land. But they, after their defeat, will overcome. (4) Within three to nine years.
[Ar-Rum 30:1-4]
?

The Shaykh : In this verse, Allah (Mighty and Majestic) made it clear that the Romans, who professed the religion of Christianity before the mission of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), are closer to the truth than their opponents, the Persians. So Allah the Exalted says:
(2) The Byzantines have been defeated (3) In the nearest land غُلِبَتِ الرُّومُ * فِي أَدْنَى الأَرْضِ
[Ar-Rum 30:2-3]
“The nearest land” means the closest land, because they were in the Levant.
But they, after their defeat, will overcome. وَهُمْ مِنْ بَعْدِ غَلَبِهِمْ سَيَغْلِبُونَ
[Ar-Rum 30:3]
The tide will turn in their favor after it had turned against them, but within a few years. “A few” refers to a period between three and nine years. So Allah (Mighty and Majestic) gave news that came to pass exactly as He reported: that these Romans who were defeated would gain the upper hand in this period. And the matter was as Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) had reported, for the Romans subsequently defeated the Persians, and the believers rejoiced in the victory of Allah (Blessed and Exalted is He) for these Romans over the Persians.

The questioner : May Allah bless you.
