Exegesis of the saying of Allah the Exalted: (Have the Romans not been defeated?)

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner: He has another question—O Your Eminence—and finally he says: What is the exegesis of
The Romans have been defeatedغُلِبَتِ الرُّومُ
[Ar-Rum:2]?
The Shaykh: According to its apparent meaning. Allah the Exalted says: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful:
(1) Alif, Lam, Meem. (2) The Byzantines have been defeated (3) In the nearest land. But they, after their defeat, will overcome. (4) Within three to nine years.
[Ar-Rum:1-4]. This is a war between the Romans and the Persians. Allah the Exalted informed that the Romans were defeated in the nearest land, and then, after their defeat, they will be victorious. That is, this was a war between the Romans and the Persians during the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Romans were defeated first, meaning the Persians overpowered them, and the polytheists rejoiced at this because the Persians were polytheists, resembling the state of the polytheists in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) who worshipped idols. As for the Romans, they are People of the Book, and they are closer to the Muslims than the polytheists. For this reason, He said regarding the victory of the Romans over the Persians:
And that day the believers will rejoice (5) In the victory of Allah. He gives victory to whom He willsوَيَوْمَئِذٍ يَفْرَحُ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ ۝ بِنَصْرِ اللَّهِ يَنصُرُ مَنْ يَشَاءُ
[Ar-Rum:4-5]. This is an authentic report from Allah the Exalted, and both of these things occurred. Yes.
