The Meaning of the Romans in the Saying of Allah the Exalted: {Alif, Lam, Meem. The Romans have been defeated}

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The first message in this episode is from listener Adam al-Sudani, residing in Riyadh al-Khudra. Our brother asks about the interpretation of some verses from the Noble Qur'an, beginning with his question about the interpretation of the saying of Allah the Exalted: I seek refuge in Allah from the accursed Shaytan.
(1) Alif, Lam, Meem. (2) The Byzantines have been defeated (3) In the nearest land. But they, after their defeat, will overcome.الم ۝ غُلِبَتِ الرُّومُ ۝ فِي أَدْنَى الأَرْضِ وَهُمْ مِنْ بَعْدِ غَلَبِهِمْ سَيَغْلِبُونَ
[Ar-Rum: 1-3]. I ask His Eminence the Shaykh to interpret this noble verse, and who are the Romans mentioned in it?
Answer: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, and may Allah send blessings and peace upon the Messenger of Allah, upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow his guidance.
As for what follows: The Romans are the well-known Christians. The state of affairs between them and the Persians was one of alternating victory in war; sometimes these would prevail over those, and sometimes those over these. So Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) informed them that they had been defeated—meaning: the Persians defeated them—in the nearest part of the land, and that they, after their defeat, would prevail in a few years. This came to pass, and the Romans defeated the Persians. This occurred at the beginning of the Prophet's mission, when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was in Makkah. This was among the signs and proofs of his (peace and blessings be upon him) truthfulness and that he is truly the Messenger of Allah, for the matter occurred exactly as he had informed in his great Book.
Allah (Mighty and Majestic) is the Knower of the unseen, and He informs His Prophet of whatever He wills of it, just as He informed him of much of what would occur in the end times, and just as He informed him of what had occurred in the past times, such as the news of 'Ad, Thamud, the people of Nuh, Pharaoh and his people, and others. And just as He also informed him (peace and blessings be upon him) of what would occur on the Day of Resurrection, the state of the people of Paradise, and the state of the people of the Fire, and so on. This is among the unseen news that the Qur'an informed of, and it came to pass as it was informed. This was among the signs of the truthfulness of his Messenger Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). Yes.
The presenter: May Allah reward you with good.
