The second question of Fatwa No. ( 4682 )
Q2: Is it permissible to deposit money that is feared to be stolen by thieves in these interest-based banks, and then withdraw it when needed, without them taking any interest and without them charging a fee for the deposit, or not?
A2: It is not permissible to deposit money and the like in interest-based banks and the like of interest-based financial institutions and organizations, whether the deposit is with interest or without interest; because of the cooperation in sin and transgression involved in that. And Allah the Exalted said:
[Al-Ma'idah 5:2] , except if it is feared that it will be lost, by theft or usurpation or the like thereof, and he finds no way to preserve it except by depositing it in interest-based banks, for example, then he is granted a dispensation to deposit it in banks and the like of interest-based financial institutions without interest to preserve it; because of the commission of the lesser of the two prohibitions.
