Selling the mosque and its ruins and using the proceeds to purchase a larger plot of land

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 1395 )
Q: We have a small mosque that Muslims built ten years ago, and it has now become too cramped for the worshippers. The desire now is to expand the mosque, but they may not be able to do so. They want to purchase a large plot of land on which to build the mosque, a school for the children of Muslims, and other facilities. He asks: Is it permissible to sell the land of the current mosque to use its value in building the new mosque?
A: If the situation is as stated in the inquiry, namely that the current mosque is cramped, that there is no room for expansion, and that dire necessity requires finding a spacious mosque that can accommodate the worshippers, a school to educate the children of Muslims, and facilities that serve these purposes, then we see no impediment to selling the land of the current mosque and its ruins, and using the proceeds to purchase a spacious plot of land in a suitable location, and building the mosque, the school, and their facilities on it; because of the public benefit in doing so. However, this is on the condition that it be undertaken by one who possesses trustworthiness, integrity, and expertise. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
