Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The questioner : What is the ruling for a pilgrim who stands at 'Arafah on the eighth or tenth day by mistake? Does it suffice for them? And what is the meaning of:
Hajj is 'Arafah الحج عرفة
?

The Shaykh : Yes, if the pilgrims stand at 'Arafah on the eighth or ninth day by mistake, then it suffices for them, because Allah the Exalted does not burden a soul beyond what it can bear, and Allah the Exalted said:
And there is no blame upon you for that in which you have erred but [only for] what your hearts intended. And ever is Allah Forgiving and Merciful.
[Al-Ahzab 33:5]
.
As for the meaning of the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Hajj is 'Arafah الحج عرفة
, it means that standing at 'Arafah is a necessary condition for Hajj. Whoever does not stand at 'Arafah has missed his Hajj. It does not mean, by consensus, that whoever stands at 'Arafah has no remaining acts of Hajj, for when a person stands at 'Arafah, he still has the acts of Hajj remaining, such as staying overnight at Muzdalifah, the tawaf of ifadah, the sa'y between al-Safa and al-Marwah, stoning the pillars, and staying overnight in Mina. However, the meaning is that standing at 'Arafah is essential for Hajj, and whoever does not stand at 'Arafah has no Hajj. For this reason, the scholars said: Whoever misses the standing at 'Arafah has missed his Hajj.

The questioner : May Allah bless you.
