The first question of fatwa number ( 3933 )
Q1: A man works as a journalist in a newspaper in Egypt, writing news and handling advertisements for which he is paid; this is in support of those who oppose Allah and His Messenger. Regarding the advertisements, he acts as an intermediary between the newspaper and the public. He goes to people (for example, merchants) and encourages them to place advertisements. They then pay for these advertisements of their own free will so that the names of their shops are published in the newspaper. This is a type of advertising, and in it they support the taghut. As a result of this, he receives a certain percentage of the advertisement fee, so he takes money. Is this money lawful or forbidden? If this money is forbidden, is it permissible for me, as the son of this man, and for my other brothers, to eat from it? It is known that he has another income from a government job. Is the money he takes from his government job permissible?
A1: First: Working to serve those who oppose Allah and His Messenger is not permissible; because it is cooperation with them in sin and aggression, which Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) has forbidden His servants from, as He said:[Al-Ma'idah 5:2] .
Second: The money earned due to cooperating with them in their evil is forbidden. Third: If your father’s money, which he earned for working with those who oppose Allah and His Messenger, is distinct from what he earned from his other job or from other permissible means, then it is not permissible for you or your brothers to eat from it. However, if it is not distinct, it is permissible for you, according to the correct opinion of the scholars, to eat from it, but leaving it is more cautious, especially if the forbidden portion is the majority.
