Explanation of the words of Imam al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) regarding what he quoted: "

The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) said, in what he quoted from Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: أما بعد أيها الناس فإنكم تقرؤون هذه الآية يا أيها الذين آمنوا عليكم أنفسكم لا يضركم من ضل إذا اهتديتم As for after, O people, you are reciting this verse: O you who believe! Take care of yourselves. No harm will come to you from those who go astray if you are guided. The apparent meaning of this verse is that if a person is guided in himself, the astrayness of others does not harm him, because he has been upright in himself. If he is upright in himself, the matter of others is upon Allah (Mighty and Majestic). Some people may interpret it and understand from it a defective meaning, thinking that this is what is intended by the noble verse, but that is not the case. Allah made it a condition that the one who goes astray does not harm us that we be guided. He said:
Those who have gone astray will not harm you when you have been guided لا يَضُرُّكُمْ مَنْ ضَلَّ إِذَا اهْتَدَيْتُمْ
[Al-Ma'idah 5:105]
And among the guidance is that we enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong. If this is part of the guidance, then we must be safe from harm, and that is by enjoining what is right and forbidding what is wrong. For this reason, he (may Allah be pleased with him) said: And I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say:
If people see the wrong and do not change it, or if they do not take hold of the hand of the oppressor, it is likely that Allah will encompass them with a punishment from Him. إن الناس إذا رأوا المنكر فلم يغيروه أو فلم يأخذوا على يد الظالم أوشك أن يعمهم الله بعقاب من عنده
Meaning that those who go astray will harm them if they see the one who is astray and do not enjoin what is right upon him or forbid him from what is wrong. It is likely that Allah will encompass them with punishment, both the doer and the negligent one: the doer of the wrong and the negligent one who did not forbid the wrong. In this is evidence that it is obligatory for a person to be careful in understanding the Book of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) so that he does not understand it other than as Allah intended. People may think the meaning is other than what Allah intended in His Book, and thus they go astray in interpreting the Qur'an. For this reason, the warning came in the hadith regarding the one who speaks about the Qur'an with his opinion, meaning he interprets it according to what he sees and desires, not according to the requirements of the Arabic language and the Islamic Shari'ah. Meaning, if a person interprets the Qur'an according to his desires and opinion, let him take his place in the Fire. As for the one who interprets it according to the requirements of the Arabic language, and he is one who knows the Arabic language, there is no sin upon him, because the Qur'an is in the Arabic tongue, so it is interpreted by what it indicates. Likewise, if the words have been transferred from the linguistic meaning to the Shari'ah meaning and he interprets them by their Shari'ah meaning, there is no blame on him. So the important thing is that it is obligatory for a person to be understanding of what Allah (Mighty and Majestic) intended in His Book, and likewise what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) intended in his Sunnah, so that he does not interpret them other than as they were intended. And success is from Allah.
The reader: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
