Q: Opinions differ regarding breaking the fast in Ramadan for one who travels from the south to perform 'Umrah. We ask you to issue a ruling on this matter. May Allah guide you to fasting and standing in prayer, for He is the All-Hearing, the Responsive to supplication.
A: One who travels a journey in which the prayer is shortened is granted a dispensation to break the fast in Ramadan; whether his journey is for 'Umrah, or to visit relatives, or to visit a friend, or to seek knowledge, or for trade, or for any of the like of permissible journeys. This is based on the saying of Allah the Exalted:[Al-Baqarah 2:185] And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
