The Meaning of the Hadith: Whoever Fasts Has a Reward, and Whoever Breaks His Fast Has Two Rewards

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The second question of Fatwa No. ( 10568 )
Q2: What is the meaning of the saying of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him): (Whoever fasts has a reward, and whoever breaks his fast has two rewards)?
A2: The well-known hadith on this matter is what Muslim narrated in his Sahih from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him), who said:
We were with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on a journey, and some of us were fasting while some of us were breaking our fast. He said: So we stopped at a place on a hot day, and the one with the most shade was the one with the cloak, and some of us were shielding themselves from the sun with their hands. He said: So the fasters collapsed, and those who had broken their fast stood up, they struck the tents and watered the riders. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The ones who broke their fast have taken the reward today.
, and in another narration from him in Muslim , he said:
The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was on a journey, and some of them fasted while some of them broke their fast. So those who broke their fast girded themselves and worked, and the fasters became weak for some of the work. He said: So he said regarding that: The ones who broke their fast have taken the reward today.
The meaning of the two hadiths is clear, and the intent is to clarify that taking the dispensation (rukhsah) of breaking the fast while traveling in cases of hardship and intense heat is better than taking the default ruling ('azimah), which is fasting. As for the hadith you mentioned, we do not know of any basis for it. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
