Fasting of a woman suffering from diabetes and tuberculosis

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 3950 )
Q: I inform you that my mother is 66 years old and has been suffering from diabetes for seven years, and she has been taking treatment for it from that time until now. In the year 1398 AH, she was afflicted with tuberculosis, and I took her to Kuwait to seek treatment. She was hospitalized in the chest disease hospital there for two years, 99 AH and 1400 AH, under treatment. Her health improved relatively from the tuberculosis, and she was discharged from the hospital. She is now at my home and is still taking treatment for both diseases, diabetes and the chest. She visits the hospital weekly. Her body has suffered from general weakness due to her advanced age and the impact of these stubborn diseases. She is currently unable to fast, as she drinks water at least once every two hours. The doctor prohibited her from fasting for the past two years when she was in the hospital. You know that the blessed month of Ramadan is approaching these days. Please inform us, may Allah reward you with good, about what she should do regarding the past two years and the coming month? May Allah guide you and forgive you, and peace be upon you.
A: If the situation is as you described regarding your mother’s illness, then
it is permissible for her to break her fast in Ramadan as long as she remains in the condition described. If she recovers and becomes strong enough to make up the fasts later, she must make up the days she missed; for Allah the Exalted and Exalted said:
and whoever is ill or on a journey - then an equal number of other daysوَمَنْ كَانَ مَرِيضًا أَوْ عَلَى سَفَرٍ فَعِدَّةٌ مِنْ أَيَّامٍ أُخَرَ
[Al-Baqarah 2:185]
And if the illness continues with her, there is no making up of fasts required of her; for Allah the Exalted and Exalted said:
Allah does not charge a soul except [with that within] its capacityلاَ يُكَلِّفُ اللَّهُ نَفْسًا إِلا وُسْعَهَا
[Al-Baqarah 2:286]
and He said:
and has not placed upon you in the religion any difficultyوَمَا جَعَلَ عَلَيْكُمْ فِي الدِّينِ مِنْ حَرَجٍ
[Al-Hajj 22:78]
and she must feed one poor person for every day she broke her fast. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
