Fasting of a Diabetic Patient
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 15270 )
Q: I have been suffering from diabetes for about four years. Every year during Ramadan, I fast, but for the last two years, fasting has been very difficult for me. The doctors told me to break my fast, so I fasted some days and broke my fast on others. 1 - Do those days have reward with Allah? 2 - Do I have to make up the days I broke my fast? 3 - During that period, I was a student, and my father paid for feeding the poor on my behalf for the days I broke my fast. Now, praise be to Allah, I am working and earning money, praise be to Allah. Do I have to return those amounts to my father that he paid on my behalf, or do I have to pay for feeding the poor again?
A: You must make up the days you broke your fast from Ramadan. You must also expiate for the days you broke your fast from Ramadan and did not fast until another Ramadan came upon you, in addition to making them up. The amount of the expiation is half a sa' (a dry measure of about 3 kg) of the staple food of the country. You feed it to poor people equal in number to those days, or you feed it to one poor person all at once. What your father paid on your behalf is valid. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
In the town, you feed poor people equal in number to those days, or you feed one poor person all at once, and what your father paid on your behalf is valid. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
