Fatwa number ( 6655 )
Q: The discussion has become heated among students of knowledge, let alone the general public, regarding fasting on Friday, if it coincides with the Day of 'Arafah; is it permissible to fast it alone if it falls on a (Friday), or is it obligatory to fast a day before or after it? It is known that if it falls on a Friday, it conflicts with the hadiths prohibiting fasting on Friday. We ask you, Your Eminence, to remove the confusion and clarify the correct legal ruling, and may Allah reward you with the best reward.
A: It is prescribed to fast the Day of 'Arafah if it coincides with Friday, even without fasting a day before it; for what is established from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is the encouragement to fast it and the explanation of its virtue and the greatness of its reward. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: narrated by Ahmad and Muslim and Abu Dawud . This hadith specifies the generality of the hadith: Bulugh al-Maram 5:41 , narrated by al-Bukhari and Muslim . Thus, the general prohibition is to be understood as applying when a Muslim fasts it alone; because it is Friday. As for one who fasts it for another matter that the Shari'ah has encouraged and urged, it is not prohibited, but rather prescribed, even if he fasts it alone. However, if he fasts a day before it, that is more preferable, as it contains caution in acting upon both hadiths, and an increase in reward.
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and companions.

صوم يوم عرفة يكفر سنتين: ماضية ومستقبلة، وصوم يوم عاشوراء يكفر سنة ماضيةNone of you should fast on Friday, unless he fasts together with the day before or the day after.
لا يصومن أحدكم يوم الجمعة إلا أن يصوم يومًا قبله أو بعدهAnd success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and companions.
