Fatwa number ( 19134 )
Q: 1- A Muslim man has accumulated a large or small amount of wealth through a forbidden means; such as selling intoxicants, pork, and carrion, or through the trade of narcotics and other forbidden things, and he wants to repent to Allah the Exalted. Is he required to dispose of all his forbidden wealth, or is it permissible for him to keep a portion of it to use in lawful trade? 2 - If he stops trading in forbidden items, but he refuses to
dispose of that forbidden wealth, then he sets up a store with that wealth in which he sells lawful things such as utensils and clothing... etc. Is it permissible to buy from and sell to him? 3 - Is it permissible to work for him in that store and for the wage to be lawful? With the note that if he is boycotted and people deal with him, it may lead him to return to the trade of materials forbidden by the Shari'ah. 4 - Is it permissible to eat his food, accept his invitation, or accept his gifts, given the strong likelihood that they were purchased with his forbidden wealth? And if one has taken some of this wealth, is he required to dispose of it, or has Allah forgiven what has passed? 5 - If he wants to donate that forbidden wealth, or a part of it, what are the permissible uses of that wealth? Is it permissible to spend it on buying books of knowledge and distributing them to needy Muslims? Is it permissible to spend those funds on spreading the Islamic call, or on buying or renting a place to be a center for calling people to Allah and teaching the children of Muslims the Qur'an and knowledge, as well as buying whatever tools that place may need for the benefit of the call? 6 - Is it permissible to borrow from that wealth for the benefit of the call or for personal benefit, or is neither permissible?
A: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:Riyad as-Salihin 1851 It was narrated by Muslim in his Sahih. Therefore, it is forbidden for a Muslim to engage in forbidden earnings, and whoever falls into any of that must repent and abandon forbidden earnings. The doors of lawful sustenance are, praise be to Allah, numerous and easy. And Allah the Exalted said: [At-Talaq 65:2-3] , and whoever repents and has wealth he acquired through forbidden means; such as riba and gambling, and the sale of forbidden materials; such as intoxicants and pork, it is obligatory for him to dispose of that wealth by placing it in public projects, such as repairing roads and restrooms, or by distributing it to the needy, and he must not keep any of it with him, nor benefit from any of it; because it is forbidden wealth, there is no good in it, and the requirement of repentance from it is to dispose of it and keep it away from himself, and turn
to other earnings. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.

A: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, "O people! Allah is Pure and, therefore, accepts only that which is pure. Allah has commanded the believers as He has commanded His Messengers by saying: 'O Messengers! Eat of the good things, and do good deeds.' (23:51) And He said: 'O you who believe (in the Oneness of Allah - Islamic Monotheism)! Eat of the lawful things that We have provided you..."' (2:172). Then he (ﷺ) made a mention of the person who travels for a long period of time, his hair are dishevelled and covered with dust. He lifts his hand towards the sky and thus makes the supplication: 'My Rubb! My Rubb!' But his food is unlawful, his drink is unlawful, his clothes are unlawful and his nourishment is unlawful, how can, then his supplication be accepted?" [Muslim] .
And whoever fears Allah - He will make for him a way out (3) And will provide for him from where he does not expect.
وَمَنْ يَتَّقِ اللَّهَ يَجْعَلْ لَهُ مَخْرَجًا (2) وَيَرْزُقْهُ مِنْ حَيْثُ لاَ يَحْتَسِبُto other earnings. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.
