Getting Rid of Forbidden Wealth and Participation in Forbidden Trade

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 8477 )
Q: It was our good fortune that we came to know your envoy, the Shaykh: Musa Jibril, and because of knowing him, the course of our lives changed. All of my family became Muslims; the men and women pray, and the women wear modest, Sharia-compliant clothing after having been naked, and they pray after having been atheists, praise be to Allah. However, I am facing a problem, which is as follows: We have a commercial shop that sells all types of intoxicants, and alongside the intoxicants, it sells lawful trade, such as food and non-alcoholic beverages. This shop’s annual revenue is
approximately one million US dollars, which belongs to me and my two brothers. I tried, with the help of the honorable Shaykh Musa Jibril , to influence my two praying brothers to sell this shop and buy another commercial shop that is pleasing to Allah and His Messenger, but we did not succeed, and we are still striving for that. Due to their insistence on it, I wanted to separate from my brothers to please the Face of Allah and His Messenger. I have no income other than this shop, and we have large sums deposited in the bank at an annual percentage rate of so much and so much. The question is as follows: Is it permissible for me to take some of this money or not? I await a quick response from your eminence, and I inform you that, praise be to Allah, I have become a caller to Allah, many have embraced Islam through me, and they have become among those who pray.

A: First: Praise be to Allah that He guided you to the truth and enabled you to follow it and act upon it. You must thank Allah for the good that has been accomplished, and ask Him, Exalted is He, to purify you from what remains of evil so that His blessing may be complete upon you. May Allah increase you in success. Second: It appears from your inquiry that the money you mentioned is mixed, its lawful with its forbidden. If that is the case, take from this money what belongs to you when dividing it, then give in charity from it an amount that you estimate, approximately, to be the amount of the forbidden that mixed with it. Rely on what remains of it; may Allah suffice you from His bounty. Allah the Exalted said:
And whoever fears Allah - He will make for him a way out (3) And will provide for him from where he does not expect. And whoever relies upon Allah - then He is sufficient for him. Indeed, Allah will accomplish His purpose. Allah has already set for everything a [decreed] extent.
[At-Talaq 65:2-3]
, and you must hasten to get rid of your participation in the trade in forbidden items that you described. You must repent to Allah and seek His forgiveness for what has passed, and you must be mindful of standing by the limits of Allah in your future in trade and other matters. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
