Fatwa number ( 9353 )
Q: We are from the rural areas of Jizan , and we are ignorant of the meaning of the hadith regarding the 'Aqiqah, as we do not know how to act upon it. Is it slaughtered and divided as raw meat or cooked? Is it charity given to the poor? Among us, one person slaughters on the seventh day and makes it a large feast, slaughtering about ten sheep, and invites his friends, near and far. They cooperate by giving him money to compensate for his loss, and this has become the custom. Also, guns and shots are required for about a full day. Please inform us, may Allah reward you; is this practice correct? If it is not correct, please inform us, may Allah guide you to the right path in this matter, and how can people be convinced to abandon what does not conform to the Shari'ah?
A: The one to whom the 'Aqiqah belongs may distribute it as raw or cooked meat to
the poor, neighbors, relatives, and friends, and he and his family may eat from it. He may also invite poor and rich people and feed them from it in his home or elsewhere, and the matter is broad in this regard. As for firing guns and the like, that is from the customs of people, not from the prescribed Sunnah regarding the 'Aqiqah, and abandoning it is good. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
