The ruling on gifts that a suitor gives to his fiancée on specific occasions such as Ashura and Rajab

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 19805 )
Q: What is the ruling of the Shari'ah regarding some matters that occur here in
Egypt, such as a suitor sending some gifts on occasions, such as the months of Rajab, Sha'ban, Ramadan, Ashura, and the two festivals? Is this matter obligatory or a recommended practice, and is there any blame on one who does so?

A: Gifts among people are among the matters that bring love and harmony, and remove bitterness and grudges from hearts. They are encouraged in the Shari'ah, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)
Narrated 'Aishah: That the Prophet (ﷺ) used to accept a gift and make return for it.يقبل الهدية، ويثيب عليها،
Sunan Abi Dawud 3536Sahih (Al-Albani)
and the practice of the Muslims has proceeded in accordance with this, and praise be to Allah. However, if a gift is accompanied by a non-Shari'ah cause, it is not permissible; such as gifts on Ashura or in Rajab, or on the occasion of birthdays and other innovations; because this involves assisting in falsehood and participating in religious innovation. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
