Q: Based on my experience as a social worker and my practice in the communities I have served (rural and urban), I intend to do the following: 1 - Gift a portion of the wealth I inherited, whether in kind or cash after selling it, to a locally registered organization that cares for the disabled, to help it fulfill its mission for the benefit of those who have been afflicted with a disability in their lives. This gift will be made through a legally registered contract or deed. 2 - Gift another portion of this inheritance in cash to the Ministry of Social Affairs in Egypt to establish a vocational training center in my father's and relatives' village to serve the village (with priority for enrollment given to our relatives and their children if they wish).
3 - Set aside a portion of this money to support me in my old age and illness. The question is: First: Is this action permissible in Shari'ah, especially since I am disposing of my wealth during my lifetime, and I intend with these gifts and donations that the greatest number of needy people benefit? Second: As for the portion I will set aside to support my old age, it is what will be inherited by those who have the right to inheritance after my death. I ask you to please issue a fatwa for me, with much thanks.
A: It is permissible for you to gift a portion of your wealth to a local organization to help it care for the disabled, and it is also permissible for you to gift another portion to the Ministry of Social Affairs to establish a vocational training center in useful religious matters in your village; this is due to the public benefit in both matters. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
