The Ruling on the Tarawih Prayer
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The first question of Fatwa No. ( 2205 )
Q1: We ask Your Eminence to issue a ruling for us regarding the Tarawih prayer: is it a prescribed recommended practice (sunnah) or a religious innovation (bid'ah)?
A1: Tarawih is a recommended practice (sunnah) established by the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The practice of the Companions in performing it is well known, and the Muslim community (ummah) received it from them, generation after generation. The first to gather them for the night prayer after the death of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), who was a rightly guided caliph. Only the people of innovation (ahl al-bid'ah) among the Rafidah deny the Tarawih prayer. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
