The Tarawih Prayer for Travelers

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 243 )
Q: What is your opinion regarding travelers: is it better for them to pray Tarawih in Ramadan or not? (They shorten their prayers)
A: Standing in prayer during Ramadan is a recommended practice (sunnah) established by the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); therefore, the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) took it from him, practiced it, and it has continued to this day. It is established in the two Sahihs from the hadith of Aisha, that he (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed it for several nights, and they prayed with him, then he delayed and prayed in his house for the rest of the month, and he said:
I was afraid that this prayer (Prayer of Tahajjud) might be made compulsory and you might not be able to carry it out.إني خشيت أن تفرض عليكم فتعجزوا عنها
Sahih al-Bukhari 924
, and in al-Bukhari: that 'Umar gathered the people under Ubayy ibn Ka'b and he led them in Tarawih. It is also established in the two Sahihs from the hadith of Abu Salama ibn 'Abd al-Rahman that he asked Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her): How was the prayer of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? She said:
He used not to pray more than eleven rak`at whether in Ramadan or in any other month.ما كان يزيد في رمضان ولا غيره على إحدى عشرة ركعة
Sahih al-Bukhari 3569
It was narrated by
al-Bukhari and Muslim in the chapter on Tahajjud. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) used to travel during Ramadan, including his (peace and blessings be upon him) journey for the conquest of Makkah . He (peace and blessings be upon him) set out when ten days had passed of Ramadan in the eighth year of the Hijrah. Ibn al-Qayyim said: (And he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not leave standing in prayer at night, whether resident or traveling, and if sleep or pain overcame him, he would pray twelve rak'ahs during the day). Thus, it becomes clear that if they pray it while traveling, they have followed the Sunnah. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
