Zakat on a Trust

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 11905 )
Q: I have a sum of two hundred French silver riyals. A person who was ill at the time entrusted this money to me and instructed me to keep it with me in the event of his death until his eldest son reaches maturity. Since the owner of the money has passed away, the money remained with me for 8 years, and after 8 years I delivered the amount to the deceased's heirs. Therefore, we seek your guidance on whether zakat is obligatory on it, and on whom the zakat falls; is it from the amount itself, or is it on the heirs, or is it on me, the trustee, at the same time? Please clarify this. May Allah reward you with good, and may Allah preserve you.
A: If the matter is as described, then zakat is to be paid from the estate before its division, covering the period before and after the death until its delivery to the heirs. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
