Paying the zakah of a trust on behalf of the trustee

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa number ( 6134 )
Q: I am of Egyptian nationality and I have money that I deposited in an
Islamic bank for Islamic transactions. One of the conditions of this bank is that the deposited money is subject to profit or loss. Also, one of its conditions is that when a lunar year passes over the deposit, the obligatory zakah on this money is paid out. So, does my liability become clear by the bank paying this zakah, or must I pay zakah in addition to the zakah the bank pays out? What is your opinion, may Allah guide you?

A : If one places his money in trust or as a profit-sharing partnership with a trustworthy person and authorizes him to pay the zakah due on it, and he pays it on his behalf, the owner’s liability is cleared by this payment. However, if he does not pay it, or if the owner doubts that he paid it, it is obligatory for him to pay it; because the original state is that the liability remains, and it is not cleared except with certainty. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
