Fasting of one afflicted with a serious illness
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 1447 )
Q: I was afflicted with a serious illness in the last ten days of Ramadan in 1395 AH, and the circumstances of the illness compelled me to break my fast for four days of that blessed month. My hope was to be cured of the illness so that I could make up those days later, but the illness continued with me until now, and we are approaching a new Ramadan. I have not been able to make up the days I broke my fast for in the previous Ramadan, and I do not have the ability to fast in the coming month of Ramadan in 1396 AH due to what I am suffering from this illness, nor do I have certainty that I will be cured of the illness in the future. I request the kindness of answering me in writing regarding what is required of me, and the kindness of specifying the value of feeding in the present time in currency, according to the condition of the feeder and the food, and if there are not multiple poor people in the village, do I repeat the expenditure on the specific poor people in the village?
A: If the matter is as you described, you must be patient until
May Allah cure you of this illness. Then you must make up the days you missed from the months of Ramadan that you are still able to reach. The basis for this is the saying of Allah the Exalted:[Al-Baqarah 2:185] Also, your assumption that you will not be cured is not a valid basis for ruling that you will not be cured, for you to feed for the past days and have the obligation to make them up dropped from you. You should have good opinion of Allah and hope for a cure, while preparing for the Hereafter. May Allah cure you of all evil and help you to fulfill the obligatory duty. When the doctors determine that this illness you are suffering from, which prevents you from fasting, is not expected to be cured, then it is obligatory for you to feed one poor person for every day, half a sa' (a dry measure of about 3 kg) of the staple food of the country, such as dates or otherwise, for the past and future months. If you provide a poor person with dinner or breakfast for the number of days you owe, that is sufficient. However, it is not permissible to give money in its place. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
