The fifth question of Fatwa No. ( 8868 )
Q5: When one of my relatives dies, they hold a feast for him after 7 days and 40 days. This is an innovation, as you have previously ruled for us, but I go in order to avoid severing ties. What is the ruling on eating from the food of this innovation?
A5: It is not permissible for you to accept the invitation; because this is from the innovations, and it is established from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:Sahih Muslim 1718a , and if you refrain from attending, that is obedience to Allah and it is not severing ties; because severing ties is that you leave off doing what is prescribed for you to do of kindness and good. But if your attendance is with the intention of changing the evil
and you are able to do so, there is no harm in your attendance to denounce the evil, provided that you do not eat the food offered for this purpose. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
