The fourth question of Fatwa No. ( 3596 ):
Q4: What is the ruling of the Shari'ah regarding the feasts offered to the awliya (close friends of Allah) annually, where in our place feasts are held for the awliya every year, which imposes a heavy burden on people, and those of weak intellect consider it obligatory for them to do so?
A4: It is not permissible to hold feasts in the name of the awliya; because this is an innovation that has been introduced. It is established from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:Sahih Muslim 1718b , and it is not permissible for a Muslim to attend them; because this is cooperation in sin and transgression, and Allah (Mighty and Majestic) has forbidden it in His saying: [Al-Ma'idah 5:2] . And if the intention in holding the feasts is to draw near to the awliya thereby, hoping for the healing of the sick and their intercession on the Day of Resurrection, or for receiving aid from them
for the living who held the feasts - then this is major shirk; because that is worship of them. And success is from Allah. And may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
