Q: I am bedridden and unable to move, so how do I perform ritual purity to offer the prayer, and how do I pray?
A: Praise be to Allah alone, and peace and blessings be upon His Messenger, his family, and his Companions.. And after: First: Regarding ritual purity, it is obligatory for the Muslim to purify himself with water. If he is unable to use it due to illness or otherwise, he performs dry ablution with pure earth. If he is unable to do that, ritual purity is dropped, and he prays according to his condition. Allah the Exalted said:
So fear Allah as much as you are ableفَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُمْ
[At-Taghabun 64:16]
. And He, Glorious is His mention, said:
and has not placed upon you in the religion any difficultyوَمَا جَعَلَ عَلَيْكُمْ فِي الدِّينِ مِنْ حَرَجٍ
[Al-Hajj 22:78]
. As for what comes out of urine and feces, it is sufficient to clean oneself with stones, wood, or pure handkerchiefs,
wiping the place of discharge three times or more until the place is purified. Second: Regarding the prayer, it is obligatory for the sick person to pray standing. If he cannot, he prays sitting. If he cannot, he prays on his side, as it is established from 'Imran ibn Husayn that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
offer prayer in standing condition; if you are unable to do so, then in sitting condition: if you are then at your sideصل قائمًا، فإن لم تستطع فقاعدًا، فإن لم تستطع فعلى جنب
Sunan Abi Dawud 952Sahih (Al-Albani)
. And His saying, Exalted and Majestic is He:
So fear Allah as much as you are ableفَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُمْ
[At-Taghabun 64:16]
And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
