The first question of Fatwa number ( 13036 )
Q1: An elderly woman in her nineties finds it difficult to perform wudu' and ghusl because she is bedridden, especially in cold weather and because the place for wudu' is far from her. Is she permitted to perform tayammum for every prayer, or to combine the times with a single wudu'?
A1: Praise be to Allah alone, and blessings and peace be upon His Messenger, his family, and his Companions.. After that: If the matter is as described, then the woman mentioned should perform wudu' to the extent of her ability, even by bringing the water to her in her place. If she cannot do that herself or with the help of others, it is permissible for her to perform tayammum; based on the saying of Allah (Mighty and Majestic):
[At-Taghabun 64:16] , and as for what comes out from the back passage and the front passage, namely excrement and urine, it is sufficient for her to clean herself with stones, tiles, or clean handkerchiefs that remove the impurity and purify the place. It is obligatory that the number of wipes for each of the back passage and the front passage not be less than three times. If that is not sufficient, it is obligatory to increase the number until the place is purified from the impurity. She may combine the Zuhr and 'Asr prayers in the time of either one; and likewise the Maghrib and 'Isha' prayers in the time of either one; because she is in the ruling of a sick person. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send blessings and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
