The Prayer of an Elderly Woman Who Is Unable to Stand
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The first question of Fatwa No. ( 782 )
Q1: This is an elderly woman, eighty years old, who has become unable to stand up from her back, and she has started praying without her usual ritual purity, sometimes performing tayammum, and sometimes wiping, and when she sits in
the prayer area, she recites the tashahhud and combines while sitting, and prays a complete prayer, and if Allah grants her health, she would repeat her prayer, but the tashahhud is sufficient.
A1: If this elderly woman is of sound mind and intellect, and prays a complete prayer while sitting because she has become unable to stand, and she has no deficiency except that she prays without her usual ritual purity, sometimes performing tayammum and sometimes performing wudu, then the one who is responsible for her affairs should guide her to the ritual purity that is obligatory upon her and assist her in it. If she is able to perform wudu but performed tayammum while being of sound mind, then she must repeat the prayer she performed with tayammum. If she performed tayammum because she was unable to perform wudu, then her prayer is valid. As for if she is not of sound mind and does not understand what she does or leaves, then no prayer is required of her, neither performing it in its time nor making up what was missed while she was not of sound mind. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
