The questioner : The questioner asks: Is it permissible to perform two prayers with a single tayammum, whether at home or traveling, combined or shortened, or each prayer in its own time? I have seen some people praying two obligatory prayers with a single tayammum. If it is not permissible, what must these people do? Yes.
The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and I send prayers and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, the Seal of the Prophets, and upon his family and all his Companions. The answer to this question depends on whether tayammum is a permission or a remover of ritual impurity, and this is a point of disagreement among the scholars. The stronger position is that tayammum is a remover of ritual impurity and a purifier, because Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, says:[Al-Ma'idah 5:6] And because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Sunan Ibn Majah 567Sahih (Darussalam) Therefore, tayammum is a purifier, as indicated by this noble verse and the hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). If it is a purifier, then it removes the state of ritual impurity. Accordingly, it is permissible for a person who performs tayammum for a prayer to remain in that state of purity, provided that nothing occurs that invalidates the wudu, and he may then pray two prayers or more, whether he combines them or prays each one separately.
Accordingly, if a person performs tayammum for the Fajr prayer, for example, and nothing occurs that invalidates the wudu until the time of Zuhr, he prays the Zuhr prayer with the tayammum he performed for Fajr. Likewise, if he remains in that state until 'Asr, Maghrib, or 'Isha, and nothing occurs that invalidates the wudu, he remains in his state of purity, meaning the purity of the tayammum he performed for the Fajr prayer. This is the stronger position. Tayammum is not invalidated except by what invalidates the purity of water, or by the presence of water if the tayammum was performed due to the absence of water, or by the removal of the permission, such as an illness or other condition, if the tayammum was performed for that reason. Therefore, we say that these people whom the questioner sees praying two or more prayers with a single tayammum, we say that their prayer is valid and there is no blame on them, as long as they remain in their state of purity.
The questioner : May Allah reward you with good.
