The Prescribed Dhikr Removes Obsessive Thoughts

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa Number ( 4677 )
Q: I am thirty-three years old, married, and have children. What I wish to ask Your Eminence about is that obsessive thoughts have entered me for the past five or six years. These thoughts occupy me during wudu' (ablution) to the extent that I cannot maintain continuity; I spend an hour and a half on wudu' every time, as I am led to believe that I have not completed it. Similarly, in ghusl (ritual bath) for janabah (major ritual impurity), I spend three hours, and I am led to believe that I have not purified myself. In ghusl for menstruation, it is also three hours. Furthermore, this obsession has prevented me from wearing beautiful clothes. I have sought treatment at the psychiatric hospital in Ta'if and with Dr. Muhammad Irfan in Jeddah. I ask Your Eminence to look into my situation and guide me with what you see as helpful in expelling this obsession. I also inform Your Eminence that I have missed days of fasting in Ramadan since my childhood, and I cannot count the days I broke my fast. What is obligatory for me regarding them? Please issue a ruling, may Allah reward you.
A: Praise be to Allah alone, and blessings and peace be upon His Messenger, his family, and his Companions... And to proceed:
First: Continue your treatment at the psychiatric hospital and with the neuro-psychiatric doctors, may Allah grant you healing. Nevertheless, seek help from Allah and ask Him to cure you of your illness. Recite Ayat al-Kursi (the Verse of the Throne) when you lie down in your bed to sleep, and say: (In the name of Allah, with Whose name nothing on earth or in heaven can cause harm, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing) three times in the morning and three times in the evening. Perform ruqyah (healing by Qur'anic recitation) on yourself by reciting Surat al-Ikhlas and the two Mu'awwidhat (Surat al-Falaq and Surat al-Nas) three times, spitting lightly into your hands after each recitation, and wiping with them as much of your body as you can when you sleep; for al-Bukhari narrated in his Sahih, and the people of the Sunan, from 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her):
Every night when he prophet (May peace be upon him) went to his bed, he joined his hands and breathed into them, reciting into them:”say: he is Allah, One” and say ; I seek refuge in the Lord of the dawn and Say: I seek refuge in the Lord of men. Then he would wipe as much of his body as he could with his hands, beginning with his head, his face and the front of his body, doing that three times.
Sunan Abi Dawud 5056Sahih (Al-Albani)
, and supplicate to Allah to remove the affliction from you, saying: (Remove the affliction, O Lord of mankind, and You are the Healer; there is no healing except Your healing, a healing that leaves no illness), and repeat this three times. Also supplicate with the supplication for distress, saying: (There is no god but Allah, the Magnificent, the Forbearing, there is no god but Allah, the Lord of the Mighty Throne, there is no god but Allah, the Lord of the heavens and the Lord of the earth and the Lord of the Noble Throne). When you have finished your wudu' or ghusl from menstruation or janabah, believe that you have purified yourself, and leave the obsession and prolonged staying in the bathroom, for it is from Shaytan, and by that it will be cut off from you, by the permission of Allah.
May Allah heal you, a healing that leaves no illness behind), and repeat that three times, and also supplicate with the supplication for distress, saying: (There is no god but Allah, the Magnificent, the Forbearing, there is no god but Allah, Lord of the Mighty Throne, there is no god but Allah, Lord of the heavens and Lord of the earth and Lord of the Noble Throne), and when you have finished the ablution or the full ritual bath from menstruation or major ritual impurity, believe that you have become pure, and leave off the obsessive thoughts and prolonged staying in the bathroom, for that is from Satan, and by that it will be cut off from you by the permission of Allah. Second: If the situation is as you described, that you fasted days of Ramadan in your youth, and you do not know those days, then fast days to make up for them until it becomes predominant in your mind that you have fasted the days you broke from the month of Ramadan after reaching puberty, as for what was before puberty, you owe nothing for it, may Allah heal you. Puberty for the man and the woman occurs: by completing fifteen years, or by the emission of semen due to desire in wakefulness or sleep, or by the growth of coarse hair around the private parts, and the woman has a fourth matter added, which is: menstruation. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.
