Q: Is it permissible to dye the beard black?
A: Praise be to Allah alone, and blessings and peace be upon His Messenger, his family, and his Companions.. After that: It is not permissible for a man to dye his beard black; because there is a command to avoid it and a prohibition against doing it. Abu Dawud narrated in his chain from Jabir ibn 'Abd Allah who said:
when Abu Quhafa (Abu Bakr’s father) was brought on the day of the Conquest of Mecca with his head and beard white like hyssop, the Prophet said, “Change this with something, but avoid black.”
أتي بأبي قحافة يوم فتح مكة ورأسه ولحيته كالثغامة بياضًا فقال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم: غيروا هذا الشيب، وجنبوه السوادAt the end of time there will be people who will use this black dye like the crops of doves who will not experience the fragrance of Paradise.
يكون قوم يخضبون في آخر الزمان بالسواد كحواصل الحمام، لا يريحون رائحة الجنةAnd success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.
