What is the ruling on dyeing the beard with black dye?
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Your Eminence, these are several questions. We reviewed some of them in our previous meeting, and there are also remaining questions we received from 'Abd al-Wahhab ibn 'Umar al-Murayhi from the Juf Scientific Institute. In his letter, he asks: What is the ruling on dyeing the beard with black dye, with evidence if possible? May Allah guide you.
Answer: In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Bestower of Mercy. Praise be to Allah, and may peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and his Companions, and upon those who follow his guidance.
As for what follows:
Dyeing the beard and the head black is not permissible according to the most correct of the scholars' opinions. This is because it is established from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), as narrated by Muslim and the people of the Sunan from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) , that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, in the story of Abu Quhafah, the father of al-Id (may Allah be pleased with him) , when he saw his beard and head white like the beak of a pigeon:.
And in the hadith of Anas in Ahmad:. Ahmad, Abu Dawud, and others narrated with a good chain from Ibn 'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said: Sunan Abi Dawud 4212Sahih (Al-Albani). This is a severe warning.
These three hadiths: the hadith of Jabir, the hadith of Anas, and the hadith of Ibn 'Abbas, all indicate the prohibition of dyeing with black, and that it is not permissible to dye it black. In the hadith of Ibn 'Abbas, there is a warning regarding this. In the hadith of Jabir, there is a command to change the gray hair and avoid black. The command is for obligation; this is the principle regarding commands. His saying: indicates the obligation of changing the gray hair. However, what came from the action of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) indicates that changing it is recommended and emphasized, but not obligatory. This is because it is reported that at times he left his gray hair white (peace and blessings be upon him), and his gray hair was few (peace and blessings be upon him). Some of the Companions did the same, which indicates that changing it is recommended and emphasized, but it must be done with something other than black. As for black, nothing has come that indicates its permissibility; rather, what has come indicates its prohibition. The avoidance of black that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded is an obligatory command. One must avoid black. This is supported by the hadith of Anas in the command to avoid black, and then it is supported by the third hadith, the hadith of Ibn 'Abbas, which contains the warning: . This is a severe warning.
This indicates the obligation of leaving pure black, and that the change should be with yellow, red, or the like. It is authentic from him (peace be upon him) that he said:Sunan Ibn Majah 3621Sahih (Darussalam). This indicates that the Sunnah is to oppose them in dyeing the gray hair. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) dyed with henna and katam, and so did al-Id and 'Umar. The Sunnah is to change the gray hair and not leave it white; this is the Sunnah. But it should be with red... with yellow... with henna and katam, and there is no harm in that. But it should not be pure black, but rather mixed black with redness... with yellowness, and there is no harm in that. What is forbidden is that it be pure black, dark... intensely black. This is the reprehensible thing. But if there is redness and blackness in it, there is no harm. Yes.
