Q 2: We use Western-style bathrooms. Is this permissible?
A 2: Praise be to Allah alone, and blessings and peace be upon His Messenger, his family, and his Companions. After that: It is permissible for you to use Western-style bathrooms, and you must fear ritual impurity lest it affect your bodies or your clothes when you relieve yourselves in them. You must also perform what is prescribed after relieving oneself, namely cleaning with stones or water, and it is better to combine both. One may suffice with cleaning with stones alone if the stones are pure and clean, provided that there are three strokes or more with actual cleaning. This is based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):Bulugh al-Maram 103, and his prohibition (peace and blessings be upon him) of cleaning with
fewer than three stones. If the three strokes do not clean, one should add more until it is clean, and it is better to stop on an odd number. This is based on his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send blessings and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
