What is the ruling on wearing Western clothes while at work?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : So we say, following up on a previous statement you directed to me, and I began to answer it, that one of us today might ask himself: Do we have a trace of hypocrisy in us when, outside the circle and the job, we Arabize and wear Islamic clothing, but when we are at the job, we Westernize, meaning we wear Western clothing? This is a very important question. Is this a type of hypocrisy? Without a doubt, this is a type of hypocrisy, but hypocrisy has degrees, and many degrees, and very many. So I had begun to discuss with you what is upon you if you left this hypocrisy, which I rightly call social hypocrisy? The answer was that you might suffer harm. Here we wanted to discuss what this harm is, but our conversation did not continue for one reason or another. However, I recall that we heard the harm might be that one might be spoken to, and warned, regarding the job and the like.
To complete this point where our conversation ended and we stopped, I say, reminding every true believer of the saying of Allah, Blessed and Exalted is He:
And whoever fears Allah - He will make for him a way out (3) And will provide for him from where he does not expect.
[At-Talaq 65:2-3]
So if this employee or that one goes to his job in his Islamic clothing, he is between two things: either no one obstructs his path or issues a warning to him, in which case that is its meaning, or they begin to issue a warning to him that this is what is appropriate and this is contrary to the law. This is like what you heard just now from our brother Abu Ahmad and what happened to him when he rode the jet ski; they wanted to prevent him from listening to the Noble Qur'an from his recorder. Then, when he stood firm and feared Allah, Mighty and Majestic, Allah supported him against them, despite their noses and despite the system or law they claim. So I believe that the Muslim's steadfastness on his principle will result in Allah, Mighty and Majestic, supporting him against his enemy, on the condition that he obeys the command of his Lord:
So do not weaken and do not grieve, and you will be superior if you are [true] believers.
[Ali 'Imran 3:139]
So we advise steadfastness, especially since I believe the situation in this country is easier than the situation in the capital. There, the system and law, which in many aspects are contrary to the Shari'ah, are applied with more care, in my opinion, than is the case here. So if you cooperate with one another and stand firm on attending work in Shari'ah-compliant clothing, I think the outcome will be for you. This is among the meanings of the saying of Allah the Exalted:
And those who strive for Us - We will surely guide them to Our ways
[Al-'Ankabut 29:69]
And His saying, Mighty and Majestic:
And whoever fears Allah - He will make for him a way out (3) And will provide for him from where he does not expect.
[At-Talaq 65:2-3]
I believe that if the people were Muslim, the ruler would rule with Islam, because he wants to please the people. And as long as most of the people want these laws that suit their desires and appetites, he adopts this system and this law. So if he feels that this people only want Islam, he will be Muslim. This is what came in a hadith, but as I always say, I am killing two birds with one stone: I clarify that this hadith, which is required by the occasion and the discourse, does not justify my silence on explaining its weakness, but at the same time I clarify that its meaning is correct. That hadith says:
Two categories of people: if they are righteous, the people are righteous, and if they are corrupt, the people are corrupt: the rulers and the scholars.
So if the scholars stand firm on their religion, the rulers will follow them, because they want to please the people among whom are these scholars. Therefore, a man is strong by his brother, so we must support one another. And when that happens, this that is weaving in the soul will naturally disappear when this Muslim finishes having two personalities: a personality in the general society where his attire is Islamic and Arab, and a personality in the private society, which is the office or the job. This problem will disappear because he will attend his private society as he attends his general society, and the sin that weaves in the soul will disappear when its cause is removed.
And with this amount, it is sufficient.

The questioner : May Allah bless you.The Shaykh .
