The eighth question of Fatwa No. ( 6366 )
Q8: Is the tashahhud that we recite in prayer the one that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said while prostrating at the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary during the Night Journey?
A8: It is narrated from Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) who said:
Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) taught me the Tashah-hud as he taught me a Sura from the Qur'an, while my hand was between his hands. (Tashah-hud was) all the best compliments and the prayers and the good things are for Allah. Peace and Allah's Mercy and Blessings be on you, O Prophet! Peace be on us and on the pious slaves of Allah, I testify that none has the right to be worshipped but Allah, and I also testify that Muhammad is Allah's slave and His Apostle.
Sahih al-Bukhari 6265
It was narrated by the group, and in one wording: that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
when anyone of you sits during his prayer, he should say: 'at-tah, iyyatu-li l-lahi,'إذا قعد أحدكم في الصلاة فليقل: التحيات لله
Sahih al-Bukhari 6328
.... and he mentioned it, and in it, when he said:
on the slaves of Allah, who are salihوعلى عباد الله الصالحين
Muwatta Malik 53:8
-
So, when you have said this, then you have surely sent the greetings to every good (pious) worshipper of Allah, whether he be in the Heaven or on the Earth .فإنكم إذا فعلتم ذلك فقد سلمتم على كل عبد لله صالح في السماء والأرض
Sahih al-Bukhari 1202
and at its end:
Then he may choose any supplication which pleases him.ثم يتخير من المسألة ما شاء
Sahih Muslim 402b
Agreed upon by al-Bukhari and Muslim. And Ahmad has it from the hadith of Abu 'Ubaydah from his father 'Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) taught him the tashahhud and ordered him to teach it to the people
The testimonies are for Allah.التحيات لله
and he mentioned it, and al-Tirmidhi said: The hadith of Ibn Mas'ud is the most authentic hadith regarding the tashahhud, and the practice is upon it with most of the people of knowledge from the Companions and the Successors.
And Abu Bakr al-Bazzar said: It is the most authentic hadith regarding the tashahhud. He said: And it has been narrated from more than twenty paths, and among those who affirmed that is al-Baghawi in (Sharh al-Sunnah), end of quote. And by this you know that this description is the most authentic of what is established from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). As for the claim that he (peace and blessings be upon him) came with the tashahhud while prostrating at the Lote Tree of the Utmost Boundary on the night of the Night Journey, we do not know of it, nor of the prostration in that place on the night of the Night Journey at all. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and his Companions.
