The Form of the Tashahhud
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The first question of Fatwa No. ( 8571 )
Q1: In the tashahhud, should one say: "Peace be upon you, O Prophet" or say: "Peace be upon the Prophet"? Because Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We used to say before the death of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Peace be upon you, O Prophet," and after his death (peace and blessings be upon him), we used to say: "Peace be upon the Prophet"?
A1: The correct view is that the one praying should say in the tashahhud: "Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings"; because this is what is established in the hadiths.
As for what is narrated from Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) regarding this, if it is authentic from him, it is the ijtihad (independent legal reasoning) of the one who did it, and it does not contradict the established hadiths. And if the ruling had differed after his death from it during his life, he (peace and blessings be upon him) would have clarified that to them. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
