Q: Why do we recite a surah after al-Fatihah in the first two rak'ahs and not recite one in the last two rak'ahs?
A: We recite it following our Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and emulating him, for it is established from him
that he did so, and it is not established from him that he recited a surah after al-Fatihah in the last two rak'ahs except in the Dhuhr prayer. It is established from him (peace and blessings be upon him) in the hadith of Abu Sa'id in Muslim what indicates that he (peace and blessings be upon him) may recite a surah or verses after al-Fatihah in the third and fourth rak'ahs, less than what he recited in the first and second. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
